Decorating for a Baby Shower

The baby shower was fun! Wow… it is a lot of work getting all the food together, mailing out invitations and of course…decorating! Yes, I think for me this was the fun part, it began by Victoria selecting a cake that she liked. Then we created the theme for decorating around the cake. It was so cool, hot pink, black, zebra! Here are a few pictures of the cake and a great idea for creating a fast table candle holder. We took beer glasses, and wine glasses and turned them up side down placed a candle on top and filled the inside with sweetheart pink roses. Tadah! A nice quick candle holder to add to the table center piece. Here are a few pictures of the decor!

One Day Room Makeover!

Had a great day yesterday! Started by doing a one day room makeover on my clients living room. I must admit this was a challenging one, moving chairs from downstairs to upstairs. But, ended with a beautiful redesign! I always love the challenge and it is wonderful that it brings great joy to my client. Last night I got a call from her thanking me for the new living and she didn't have to buy a thing. Just thought I would post her email to me.

Fragrances influence our mood. Have you ever walked in to a space and it smells fresh–something about great fragrances influence our moods.
The addition of fragrance to a candle formulation is commonplace in the United States. In fact, an estimated 75 to 80 percent of candles sold in the U.S. are scented. Candle manufacturers work closely with fragrance. companies to develop scented formulations that are not only pleasing, but will burn safely and properly. The aroma from a lighted scented candle is released through the evaporation of the fragrance from the hot wax pool and from the solid candle itself. Like unscented candles, properly-formulated scented candles will primarily produce water vapor and carbon dioxide when burned. The only difference is that a fragrance is also released with a scented candle.
Most scented candles contain a combination of natural and synthetic fragrances These fragrance materials may be derived from essential oils or from synthetic aroma chemicals. A well-made candle will contain only fragrance materials approved for candle use; the addition of fragrance to a candle formulation should be carefully monitored to ensure that the candle will burn cleanly and properly.
Candle manufacturers can select from more than 2,000 aroma chemicals and essential oils to develop scents that are both pleasing to consumers and compatible with candle use. These fragrance materials are safe, high-quality ingredients that are also found in many perfumes, bath soaps, lotions and shampoos.

Holiday Decorating

Now is the time we start thinking about moving out some of our summer decor items and making room for our warm cozy winter decor. Yes, even though we are in the 80’s cool weather and a new season is on the way. I love to decorate for the season. It is time… to add a new look to our home or office decor. Small and affordable changes add wonderful inspiration. Just by changing out a throw that you have on you favorite chair or sofa in the summer time, storing it away and adding a warm soft winter throw makes a difference; its as if you are inviting the new season in! Changing throw pillows on your sofa is an affordable way to get a new look. Change out summer and spring silk floral in your room to cool weather silk floral. When you move out summer items you make room for the holiday decorating season. I don’t know about you but we have had a hot summer and I am very happy that fall and winter are almost here!

Decorate Everything With Bows
One of my favorite ways to decorate for the holidays is to use ribbons, add them to chair backs, candlesticks, wreaths, garlands, basket handles, drapery tie-backs, stair railings, and doorknobs. Buy wide flat ribbons and tie around the backs of you dining chairs, then tie a bow on the back of the chair and add silk poinsettia’s and greenery, this is a festive holiday look. It works great for thanksgiving and Christmas.
Invest in nice quaility ribbons that you can use for year to year.
Bows look festive and the ribbons you choose should tie together with the rest of your decorating. Choose ribbons in colors and patterns that coordinate with your decorating scheme.
Choose plaids or florals that tie in with your decor. You don’t have to stick with red and green. If you can’t find anything that looks quite right, then choose metallic silver, gold or bronze.
Choose a ribbon that you can untie and re-tie each year. This will save money in the long run. When the holidays are over, untie the ribbons and press them lightly. The bows won’t get crushed and the ribbons will be ready to start again next year.

Back home from the conference. What an awesome time to get with other decorators, stagers and redesigners. We were able to share valuable information. Got lots of new creative ideas.

First week back has been busy. Did a Real Estate staging yesterday. Today I met with all of the subs to discuss a bathroom remodel and get bidding together for my wonderful homeowner! Then after that ran over to meet a new lovely client that was referred to me to do blinds in her new home. Wow- I had a full busy day.. and I love it and thank God for all of my great clients and the business I have.

It's a new morning! The weather is cool outside--- enjoyed sitting out on my patio having coffee this morning! Well, I love my job, everyday is a new world in the design business. Today I am going to an appointment to measure for custom draperies in a medical office for sleep disorders. They need custom draperies with black out lining so that when the draperies are closed they will be totally dark in the room for sleeping. Then I am off to work on a Apartment club room. Wow another busy day!

PreFall Weekend Project

OK Guys let's face it, here in Texas it has been to hot to spend a lot of time outdoors on our patios. Mine, has been looking pretty neglected. But, my excuse is tooooo hot--wow, even my pool is hot...

Good news! Fall is around the corner! Let me inspire you to do what I did this weekend (but start early in the morning). Do a prefall patio clean up! I powerwashed --put some vanish on my patio set--- Re-potted some heat strichen plants, rearranged the patio furniture. Looks great now wow!! I love the outdoors and find that just a little decorating touch goes a long way on our patios!! If you have dead plants in pots pull them out and throw them away better to have an empty pot then one with a dead plant.

So I challenge you to a weekend project, to get ready for fall and back and enjoying those outdoor grills and just sitting out listening to the birds sing! Remember your space is your sanctuary-- but have to create it!

Kitchen Remodel on a budget!

You don't have to feel stuck with a dingy and drab kitchen that was last decorated in the 70's. No matter what your budget, you can make changes to freshen it up and bring it into the 21st century.
The key is the floorplan. If the floorplan is bad, you'll be stuck unless you have a big bank account. If it works, the rest is a breeze.

If you're not sure what to do with the money you have, whether it's a few hundred dollars or several thousand, you might find that hiring a decorator to consult for an hour or two is money well spent. She can help you prioritize your project, select colors for the transformation, and help you focus your work.

So, pull your numbers together and choose your project. Even if you have under $500 to spend, you can still have a fresh-looking new kitchen.

Replace the Cabinet Hardware
Sometimes the simplest changes make the greatest impact. It's like finishing off a wonderful dress with the perfect piece of jewelry. For kitchen cabinets, you can see an amazing change by replacing the old cabinet knobs with new ones. Get rid of dingy, greasy knobs in favor of trendy brushed nickel or antique brass, and voila! fresh new look. Be sure to count carefully before you head out to the store. Prices of cabinet pulls can vary widely, so set your budget, divide the amount by the number of pulls you'll need, and stick to that figure.

Brighten Things Up
You can find a good-looking decorative light fixture at any hardware or home improvement store. Get rid of the ugly recessed fluorescent light in the middle of the ceiling. Be brave and consider a chandelier. Or consider focused track lighting. A new light fixture will brighten up the space and add a decorative element. Get rid of your ugly fluorescent fixture that's hanging in the center of the kitchen ceiling. There are so many fashionable fixtures available from $50 to $200. Choose a fixture that matches the drawer pulls for a coordinated look. And don't just think about a fixture that hugs the ceiling. A chandelier will really dress up the space!

Buy Some Paint
A fresh coat of paint is one of the least expensive ways to transform any space in your home. And the kitchen is no exception.
Start with the ceiling. If the surface overhead is yellowed and greasy, clean it carefully and paint it a bright, clean white. The whole room will light up.

The next easiest project with paint is to change the color of the walls in the kitchen. Choose a color that will blend with the tone of the cabinets and flow into the adjoining rooms. We recommend an oil-based enamel semi-gloss paint for a kitchen, making clean-ups easier and providing a longer life.

If you're feeling particularly ambitious, painting the cabinets would be the most time-consuming, yet still inexpensive, project. Remove the cabinet doors and sand them carefully to remove the finish. Sand the frames and interior of the cabinets. Paint the interiors first, preferably in a fresh white or cream. Then carefully paint the visible frame areas, ending with the cabinet doors. When dry, replace the doors on the frames.

Add Some Work Space
If your kitchen has an open floor, place a small table in the center of the room. This space will provide extra counter area, provide seating, and give you more work space.
Self-Adhesive Flooring
For dingy floors that are smooth, clean, and level, you might consider covering them with a fresh self-adhesive vinyl flooring. This can be purchased in strips or 12" square tiles. Read installation instructions carefully, then place one tile at a time until the room is finished. You can cut the tiles to shape with a scissors or straight blade. What could be easier?
Show Off Your Treasures
If your upper cabinets are have a center panel, remove the solid wood and replace one or two with panels of glass. Install lighting above and show off your collectibles and beautiful crystal or dishes.

Add a Touch of Mother Nature
You'd be amazed by the change you'll see just by adding a bit of green in plants and flowers. Don't clutter the counter, but find space above cabinets or in corners. Your space will look fresh and new.

Starting a Decorating Project...Get Organized!

When you're getting ready to begin a decorating or remodeling project it's a great idea to get everything together. And keep it together! Any building, remodeling, or decorating project will be easier if you get organized before you start with a Decorating File.

Your Decorating File will hold everything you'll need to coordinate the project. Include carpet samples, fabric cuttings, paint samples, floor plans, wallpaper cuttings, photos, and pictures of inspiration rooms. Having everything in one place will help the job go more smoothly from conception to completion.

You can choose any style of file you want. The choice is yours. A small canvas tote bag, briefcase, notebook with file pockets, expanding envelope, or file box works well. Be sure you select a container that will be easy to carry from store to home and large enough for all your items. When hiring a decorating professional to help you with your project it helps convey to them your decorating style...after all it’s your space it needs to be things you love.

TABLEAUX---This is a faux iron that I have been using in quite a few of my projects, it is beautiful and makes a nitche have its own personality; IN this photo the nitches were orginally glass shelves, I had the inside of each shelved faux painted and added faux iron for a lovely new look!

Before Draperies and After New Draperies

This is an example of how changing draperies in a room transformed this space from drab to fab!. Here are the before pictures of the old aqua colored drapery panels, I replaced them with nice fabrics with deep color tones that I chose from the furniture in the room. We installed them yesterday. Wow...another great improvement! :)

The Spring time has been very busy for me--- I have been working with my customers bringing in fresh Spring accents and accessories to add to their decor. It is amazing what a few new home accessories can do spruce up and create a beautiful fresh look! Getting a new look for your space does not always have to been expensive. Just replacing old worn out throw pillows on your sofa with nice new accent colors can make a tired sofa look new.

This is a job I just finished at a Apartment Clubroom. We painted a drab beige ceiling and made it look like clouds and a sky. We also fauxed all of the concrete pillars --to look like marble. Ashlie and Kindra my awesome faux artist did the work here on this project. I have more pictures of the redesign on this apartment clubroom project that I will post. It really turned out beautiful!

This is a dining room that we did a makeover on. The first picture is the before and the second is the after. Wow, what a big improvement! Notice the top of the China hutch before and after and the arrangement of the table. This really opened the room up and made it appear much larger.

This is a living room the I did a room makeover--- it took about 3 hours and we truly transformed the look of the room. The first picture is the look when we arrived ---the second picture is the after we rearranged the furniture and redesigned the room. My client was very happy she felt she had a new room for a very affordable price. We used all of her existing furnishings and practiced the art of new placement.

Yesterday we had a great time arranging beautiful spring flowers for the Pin Oak Charity Horse Show that will be starting this week. We had hundreds of beautiful flowers to arrange throughout the arena and around the show ground take a look at some of our beautiful pots we created!
